WADENA - Trey VanOrsdel set the Wadena-Deer Creek High School record for falls with 26 as the top-seeded Wolverines defeated No. 8 Wheaton-Herman-Norcross 43-30 in the Section 6-1A wrestling quarterfinals Tuesday.
VanOrsdel pinned Garrett Bahrens at 145 pounds to up his record to 29-5 as top-seeded W-DC advanced to the section semifinals in Wheaton at 1 p.m. Saturday against No. 4 Barnesville.
The winner meets the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/New York Mills winner for the championship at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Boys' hockey seeded third
The Brainerd Warrior boys' hockey team has been seeded third in the Section 8-2A tournament and will host No. 6 Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
The tournament begins Saturday with No. 9 Becker-Big Lake at No. 8 River Lakes.
Other quarterfinal games Tuesday send the River Lakes/Becker-Big Lake winner to No. 1 Roseau, No. 5 St. Cloud Tech to No. 4 Buffalo and No. 7 Northern Lakes Lightning to No. 2 Moorhead.
Semifinals are at 1 and 2:45 p.m.. Feb. 23 at Thief River Falls. The championship is 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at St. Cloud State.
Wrestlers seeded second
The Brainerd Warriors wrestling team has been second in the Section 8-3A tournament, which will be wrestled Saturday at Sauk Rapids.
At 12:30 p.m., Brainerd will meet No. 7 St. Cloud Tech, No. 1 Alexandria faces No. 8 Moorhead and No. 3 Buffalo meets No. 6 Bemidji.
Semifinals are at 3 p.m. and the championship at 5 p.m.
Sophomore boys win
The Brainerd sophomore boys' basketball team beat Willmar 50-28 Tuesday to up its record to 18-1.
Leading the Warriors in scoring were Jordan Goos with 14 points and Carsten Nelson with 13. The Warriors play Friday at St. Cloud Apollo.
Sophomore girls lose
The Brainerd sophomore girls' basketball team lost to Grand Rapids 56-46 Tuesday.
Brainerd was led in scoring by Tess Rahto with 18 points and Emilee Branum with nine.
Zemke to speak to boosters club
Brainerd Warriors swimming and diving coach John Zemke will be the speaker at the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club meeting, which begins at noon Thursday at the Moose Lodge.
Tom Lyscio, the Warrior Athlete of the Week, will be honored.
The club's final social for members and fans is 5:30 p.m. Thursday at 9th Street Bar, followed by the girls' basketball at 7:30 p.m. between Brainerd and Sartell.
