Pequot spring sports meeting Feb. 23

PEQUOT LAKES -- A meeting is scheduled 7:15 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Pequot Lakes High School gym for parents and athletes interested in spring sports.

This will be a time for parents and athletes to meet their coaches, pay fees, and complete paperwork.

Fees and paperwork need to be finished before the first day of practice or an athlete will not be permitted to participate.

Sophomore boys defeat Apollo

The Brainerd Warriors sophomore boys' basketball team beat St. Cloud Apollo 63-44 Thursday.

Leading the Warriors in scoring were Landon Stanfield with 22 points and Danny Markow with 16.

JV gymnasts win in landslide

Brainerd gymnast Carlie Kramer won the vault, floor exercise and all-around to lead the Warriors to a 129.65 to 69.20 junior varsity victory Friday over Grand Rapids.

Lauren Deyo won balance beam while teammate Jenna Niggeler won the parallel bars.

Commissioner's wife among appointments to amateur sports panel

ST. PAUL (AP) -- Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Friday named the wife of one of his cabinet members to the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission, filling a seat left vacant by the death of famed hockey coach Herb Brooks.

Linda Goodno, the wife of Department of Human Services Commissioner Kevin Goodno, was one of four appointments to the commission the governor announced.

She will complete Brooks' term, which runs through January 2005. The former collegiate, professional and Olympic hockey coach died in a car accident in August.
