MESA, Ariz. -- Pauline Viola Root Howard, 79, Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Crosby, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
She was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Aitkin to Richard and Marie Tully. She graduated from Aitkin High School in 1939. She attended Brainerd Junior College. She married Lloyd Root in 1940. She served as choir director, organist and as a participant in many musical groups with youths and adults in Crosby and Sun Lakes, Ariz. She was a music teacher at St. Joseph's School in Crosby and was active in the Sweet Adelines groups in Brainerd and Sun Lakes. She had lived in Sun Lakes since 1985. She married John "Jack" Howard in 1993. She was active as a clown, performing for schools and hospitalized children.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gary Root, Scottsdale, Ariz., Lloyd Root, Gilbert, Ariz., and Jim Root, Milwaukee; a daughter, Dianne Wentz, Duluth; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Frederick Tully, Aitkin; and a special friend, Eileen Root, Chandler.
Her first husband, Lloyd Root; a daughter, Mary Lou; a son, Robert; two brothers, Albert Tully and Gordon Tully; and three sisters, Inez Brown, Eloise LaCasse and Eleanor Cartie, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crosby with Father Howard Eisel officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Memorials are preferred to St. Jude's Foundation, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the American Heart Association.
Friends may call an hour before services Saturday at the church.
