MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota won its season opener 9-1 over Illinois State at the Metrodome after jumping to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
The Golden Gophers added four runs in the sixth inning on Sunday, which included Matt Brousseau's three-run double.
Winning pitcher Chadd Clarey gave up five hits and struck out five in 5 2-3 innings. Brandon Kitzerow pitched the final 3 1-3 innings to earn his first career save.
Kitzerow gave up a two-out single to the Redbirds' Jared Dufault in the ninth, scoring Lance McMillian from third.
The teams play a doubleheader today. The seven-inning games start at 1 p.m.
