AITKIN -- Erland T. Paulson, 82, Aitkin, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Riverwood Health Care Center of Aitkin.
He was born March 3, 1917, in Nordland Township to John and Laura (Brown) Paulson. He attended White Oak Schoolhouse and then graduated from Aitkin High School in 1935. He served in World War II from January 1942 through December 1945. He married Elsie Nelson on Aug. 3, 1946. He worked as a mechanic for Cliff Newton's garage in Aitkin. He also owned a garage with a partner in Crosby. He began farming. He lived in Spencer Township from 1948-1998. He retired from farming in 1985. His son, Dave, purchased the family farm in 1998.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Aitkin. He served for two terms on the First Lutheran Church board. He also served on the Aitkin Co-op Creamery, North Star Co-op Society, Minnesota Turkey Growers, the Aitkin Area Turkey Growers Association, helping to set up the association, American Cancer Society, Supervisor Spencer Township and A.S.C.S. boards. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 164, American Legion Post No. 86 and Roberts Glad Post No. 1727. He served as Commander for 14 years, Quartermaster for 14 years, a term of one year to the VFW 6th District Adjutant and for the 6th District Poppy chairman and he had charge of the VFW Color Guard for 40 years. He was also recognized for over 300 hours of volunteer work at the Veterans Administrations Hospital of St. Cloud.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Anna Miller, St. Paul, Laurnel Landrus, Fridley, and Leonore Winn, Ironton; two sons, John Paulson, Mora, and David Paulson, Aitkin; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a sister, Erma Giernot, Hermantown; and a brother, John Paulson, Aitkin.
Two brothers, Edwin and Albert, and a sister, Leonore Nelson died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church of Aitkin with military honors provided by Aitkin VFW Post No. 1727 and the American Legion Post No. 86. Memorials are preferred.
Friends may call at Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home of Aitkin from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and at the church an hour before services Wednesday.
