The Brainerd Varsity Dance Team, the Kixters, are the Section 3A high kick champions and will advance to state competition Saturday at the University of Minnesota's William's Arena.
The sectional competition was held Saturday in Anoka and the top four teams advance to state. Team scores were Brainerd, first, 6.5; Anoka, second, 8.5; Blaine, third, 15.5; Elk River, fourth, 16.5; Champlin Park, fifth, 17; St. Cloud Apollo, sixth, 22.5; Coon Rapids, seventh, 26; St. Cloud Technical, eighth, 29.5; Duluth East, ninth, 37; Moorhead, 10th, 39; Bemidji, 11th, 44; and Forest Lake, 12th. 48.
"After performing and watching our competition, I felt we would win," said Coach Cindy Clough. "We had a few minor execution errors, which we will need to avoid for this weekend, but I felt our skills far surpassed our competitors.
"We received great choreography, energy and kick scores and our spacing formations worked out great and I hope we can make it through pre-lims and into the top six for finals in state."
The Kixters plan to fine tune their execution and endurance this week. The tough teams for them to beat in state will be Burnsville and Eastview.
They placed eighth in jazz funk, failing to qualify in that category. Team scores in this event were: Blaine, first, 4; Anoka, second, 9; Champlin Park, third, 13; Elk River, fourth, 16; Duluth East, fifth, 24.5; Coon Rapids, sixth, 24.5; Brainerd, seventh, 25; Moorhead, eighth, 29.5; Bemidji, ninth, 36; and Forest Lake, 10th, 40.
The Aitkin and Crosby dance teams traveled to Hawley this past Saturday in Class A Section 3A competition. Aitkin won the high kick event and took third place in jazz. They will advance to state competition in both of these events at Williams Arena this weekend.
Crosby won the high kick event too and will advance to state. They placed eighth in jazz.
