MOTLEY - Alma M. DeGeest, age 90, of Motley, passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 10, 2009, at the Lakewood Health System hospital in Staples. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples with Pastor Robin Collins officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery at Staples in the spring.
Alma Magdaline DeGeest was born Nov. 29, 1918, in Chippewa County, Minn., the daughter of Johann Jacob and Margaretha M. (Ewald) Junker. She was confirmed in her faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 15, 1932, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Motley, Minn. She graduated from Motley High School in 1937. On April 20, 1938, she was united in marriage to Glen DeGeest at the church parsonage in Staples. To this union three girls, Janet, Alice and Glenda, were born. Alma and Glen were able to share more than 67 years of marriage together before he died on Aug. 18, 2005.
Alma was a devoted mother and helpmate on the farm and also worked in a jacket factory in Staples until her retirement. She loved to sew, garden, spend time outside and being with her family. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was involved in Ladies Guild, prayer chain and quilting.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen; daughter, Janet; and siblings, John, Wilhelm, Otto, Carl, Hans, Ernest, Eggert, Frieda, Christine, Elsie and Marie. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Alice (Lloyd) Beckmann, of Clara City, Minn., and Glenda (John) Betts, of Clearwater, Minn.; grandchildren, Julie (Bruce) Granby, Jeffrey Beckmann, Lowell (Tammy) Beckmann, LuAnn (Gary) Selover, Jana Beckmann, Brian (Wendy) Betts and Lora (Doug) Eisenschenk; great-grandchildren, Alison and Emily Granby, Haley, Levi and Logan Beckmann, Caleb and Kaitlyn Betts and Trevor Selover; sister, Louise DeGeest; sisters-in-law, Mary (Paul) Beers and Eleanor (DeGeest) Hellvang; also many nieces and nephews.
