20 years ago (1981)

National Honor Society induction ceremonies were held recently at Brainerd Senior High School, with 81 seniors, the largest number ever chosen at the local school, installed as members.

30 years ago (1971)

Brainerd was one of the leaders in employment in Minnesota last year. Brainerd's average monthly employment gain in 1970 was 4.5 percent over 1969. State employment increased only 1.7 percent.

40 years ago (1961)

Board of Education Meeting: Seven new teachers were offered contracts for next year, wrestling definitely should be continued as a high school sport and a consulting firm said it did not believe the Washington High School gymnasium ceiling was installed according to specifications.

60 years ago (1941)

With the flurry of first day activities out of the way, Brainerd's 87 National Guardsmen settled down to the routine which will be in effect until they board a train Feb. 19 and head west for Ft. Lewis, Wash., and a year of federal service.

80 years ago (1921)

"One thing I imagine most puzzles the military authorities."

"What is that?"

"How to keep a standing army in good running order."

100 years ago (1901)

"You must keep your mouth shut when you are in the water," said the nurse, as she gave Bessie a bath. "If you don't, you'll swallow some of it."

"What if I do?" asked Bessie immediately. "There's plenty more in the pipes, isn't there?"
