Bud Larsen of Brainerd recently demonstrated unusual instruments to students in the Music in World Cultures class at Central Lakes College.
The course centers on ethnomusicaology, the study of music of different cultures in the context of human life.
Larsen's collection of drums, flutes, shells, thumb pianos, marimbas and shakers comes primarily from his travels to Africa and Papua New Guinea.
Crystal Longseth, a Central Lakes College freshman from Brainerd, demonstrated her replica of a one-string Arabian fiddle she made in an assignment for the Music in World Cultures class. Guest ethnomusicologist Bud Larsen shared tips on making instruments from common materials, including PVC pipe.
