FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota State officials would like to shorten a five-year probation period for schools that opt to move from NCAA Division II to Division I.
NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor and women's athletic director Lynn Dorn say they are drafting a letter to members of a subcommittee working on Division I membership rules.
The 49-member council is expected to approve new rules at its April meeting. Taylor said he would like to see some flexibility in the probationary period.
If NDSU were to pass the peer review test, the final step in the reclassification process after three years, it should be given full Division I benefits, he said.
"You have to give an opportunity for a mature institution like North Dakota State to be able to push through the process faster," Taylor said. "What we're saying is that if you have it all together after three years then let's go."
An NCAA committee conducts the peer review test. All Division I schools are tested once every several years.
