NISSWA - The 36th annual Nisswa Jubilee weekend of events from food and music and a parade to broomball tournaments and helicopter rides begins Friday.
Event activities, from a list of tentative times from the Nisswa Chamber, are expected to include the medallion hunt sponsored by Lakes Area Lions Clubs and the Nisswa Chamber with clues posted Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the chamber. The Lakes Area Lions Club is offering a cash prize of $200.
Commemorative Nisswa Jubilee buttons are available for $2 at The Pickle Factory, Nisswa American Legion and Nisswa Chamber building. The buttons are required to get into the live music events at the Nisswa Legion.
Other Friday events include Chef Tom's Luncheon at the Nisswa Legion from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a meat raffle and 6 p.m. Chef Tom's Western Hanging Beef Buffet followed by a dance with live band Muddy Waters by Jack Franzen from 7:30-11:30 p.m.
The Miss Nisswa Pageant at Lutheran Church of the Cross, sponsored by the Nisswa Woman of Today, begins at 7 p.m.
Saturday events include a food court in front of the Pickle Factory that is expected to run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Snow sculpture judging is at 10 a.m. with youth and adult categories. A Mini Jubilee with games for children is from 10-11 a.m. at the Nisswa Community Center and a broomball tournament is expected at 10 a.m. at the Nisswa Park. Participants may call Brian Wallin at 839-4926 to sign up.
Hawkeye Helicopter with rides based out of the Nisswa School yard will be available with expected times running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parade participants are expected to line up about 11 a.m. with a parade down main street at noon.
Grand Marshal is Mimi Thurlow and her daughters - Maggie, Jackie, Lizzie. The Nisswa Legion will again feature Chef Tom's Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A wood splitting contest behind the chamber building is expected to start at 1 p.m. and a volleyball tournament outside the Pickle should begin at 1:30 p.m. The broomball championship game is planned at 3 p.m. More food options are at the Nisswa Legion at 4 p.m. with a meat raffle and Chef Tom serving Pork Sandwiches.
Dancers will find action at 8:30 p.m. with Silent Partner playing at the Nisswa Legion.
On Sunday the Ice Fishing Derby on Nisswa Lake just off the Hazelwood Drive access is from noon to 2 p.m. A tug-o-war is planned at the Nisswa Legion at 4 p.m. along with an option to buy a Sloppy Joe meal served by the Nisswa Legion Auxiliary. At 4 p.m. a musical jam session is planned with Nisswa All Stars.
