EMILY -- The Emily/Outing/Fifty Lakes Lions Club sponsored a youth outreach/drug awareness poster contest.
Posters created by 10 classes in preschool through eighth grade were judged. Monetary prizes included $15 for first place in each class and runner-up in each class, and $5 for second place in each class.
Winners from Emily Charter School were:
Preschool, Dakota Carstens, first and second place; kindergarten, Crystal Eastman, first, and Madeline Kertzman, second; first grade, Melissa Stirewalt, first, and Rachel Allen, second; second grade, Thomas Mitlyng, first; third grade, Leah Nevin, first, and Nathan Friesner, second; fourth grade, Ashley McCapes, first; and sixth grade, Melinda Russell, first, and John Terpstra, second.
Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade posters were eligible to be judged on the district level. Melinda Russell was the grand prize winner, winning a $100 savings bond and a 19-inch color TV. Her poster will be re-created on a magnet and will be available next fall.
