District champions crowned in Hoop Shoot
Three Brainerd area youths competed in the Elks District Hoop Shoot free throw contest Jan. 23 at Wadena.
Jordan Schommer (age 9) was second, Ashley Huber (10) second and Jenna Degen first.
First- and second-place trophies were awarded to boys and girls in each of three categories: ages 8-9; 10-11; and 12-13.
Jenna Degen nailed 21 out of 25 free throws on her way to first. Jenna, along with five other district champions, advanced to the state finals Feb. 6 at Hutchinson. The six state winners will compete in the Elks Regional Hoop Shoot March 12-14 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Elks district winners:
• Girls 8-9: Hannah Johnson, Willmar, 16 of 25.

• Boys 8-9: Noah Stagter, Willmar, 23/25.
• Girls 10-11: Casey Volkmann, Wadena, 16/25.
• Boys 10-11: Colton Swart, Willmar, 16/25.
• Girls 12-13: Jenna Degen, Brainerd, 21/25.
• Boys 12-13: Damon Tumberg, Wadena, 22/25.
