Black belt rank exam slated Friday in Baxter

A black belt rank exam of traditional Japanese karate is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Just for Kix studios in Baxter, located behind the Lodge.

It will be the first black belt rank exam in Brainerd since karate was introduced to the lakes area in 1976.

Eight men will be performing to attain ranks of first-, second- and third-degree levels of black belt. Candidates for third Dan all have more than 15 years of experience.

Master instructor Tim Kiel and associates will officiate the examination. Mr. Kiel introduced traditional Shotokan karate to the lakes area in 1976 and is founder of Central Minnesota Karate.

The exam is free and open to the public.
