20 years ago (1990)

Brainerd's Lance Hoff set a Monticello pool record in the 100-yard backstroke as the Warriors scored a 90-79 victory against the Redmen. Hoff's time was 57.34 and he also won the 200 freestyle Other Warrior winners were Steve Piepgras and Sean Kaneske.

30 years ago (1980)

(Photo) Larry Lopp, of the Paul Bunyan Amusement Center, recently presented the first contribution to Outreach 80, a promotion and advertising group organized to raise $35,000 to attract visitors to the area. Accepting the $1,000 is Earl Johnsen.

40 years ago (1970)

(Photo) Terry Grewe, a 498-point scorer entering the contest, tacked on 22 points as the Brainerd JC Red Raiders smashed visiting Vermillion JC 94-62 here. The Raiders flew high in the opening half, building an incredible 59-20 lead.

60 years ago (1950)

It took a lot of battle and an ice pick, but John Arvid Johnson of Cuyuna landed a 15-pound northern while angling on Mille Lacs Lake. The fish was too big to fit through the hole, so he fought the fish one-handed while using an ice pick to enlarge the hole.

80 years ago (1930)

Southsiders have made a toboggan and ski slide in the hills and hollows of South Broadway and many enjoyed the sport on Sunday afternoon last.

100 years ago (1910)

Louis Hohman has received the first Edison Amberola phonograph ever brought to Brainerd. It is the new four-minute phonograph of the highest grade, in a cabinet of mahogany. It sells at $200 and was bought by a well-known Brainerd citizen.
