More than 300 students and their parents attended a family night organized by the Brainerd School District Title 1 staff Monday at Brainerd High School.
Families enjoyed dinner together followed by an night of storytelling, educational card games and dancing.
Title 1 is a federally funded program that provides support to assist students who are not at grade level in math and reading.
The program requires schools and districts to provide annual parent involvement activities.
Dr. Deal-A-Word talked to the crowd during his program Monday night in the Brainerd High School cafeteria. The traveling show featured spelling and word games to stimulate the reading skills of children.
This year the goal was to provide a district-wide event.
As a result, Mark Hostetler, Dr. Deal a Word, entertained the students and families with his card games.
Ashley stared while Wendy Tibbetts laughed after Dr. Deal-A-Word sprayed the pair with "goop" during the program sponsored by the Brainerd School District to help parents become active in children's reading programs.
