Brainerd High School graduate Andy Pickar is ranked fourth at 165 pounds for the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks, who are ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll.
Mankato, 16-0-1 overall, wrestles Friday at second-rated Nebraska-Omaha.
Lacy places first, nabs two seconds
GARRISON - Ken Lacy of Baxter raced his Polaris to one win and two seconds in the third round of the WSA-Xtreme Ice Series Sunday on Garrison Bay on Lake Mille Lacs.
Lacy won the Sportsman 800 class and finished second in the Formula 500 and Sportsman 600. The series also included ATV and motorcycle racing.
The series will return to the area Feb. 16-17 on Big Sandy Lake in McGregor and Feb. 23-24 at Hill City.
Concordia College senior Dusten Olejnicak of Brainerd continued his success in the 2008 men's indoor track and field season.
A week after posting a mark of 22-0 3/4 in the long jump, Olejnicak jumped 22-1 1/2 at the Bison Open on Feb. 2. He finished second in the event, the top Cobber finish at the meet. Olejnicak's distance is the top mark in the MIAC this season and a personal best.
It is also the farthest by a Concordia athlete in an indoor season since John Andan jumped 22-6 in 2001.
Olejnicak continues to creep closer to the NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 22-10.
JV, soph boys win
The Brainerd Warrior junior varsity boys' basketball team defeated Sauk Rapids 47-41 Thursday as Dan Bendzick scored 10 points, Mike Gervenak and Turner Johnson nine apiece and Tyler Kline eight.
The Brainerd sophomores defeated Sauk Rapids 71-44 Thursday as Joel Martin scored 15 points and Karl Freudenberg 14.
