There was a time when many people ice fished to relax. But that has changed. Today's ice anglers have an intensity about them. Ice fishing "teams" mobilize and map out the lake bottom via high-tech depth finders. They drill holes by the dozens and hustle back and forth between them as they try to find crappies, walleyes, and sunfish. Nobody rests until fish are found, and if you can't find them, get moving.

A contentious land-use issue has arisen in recent years between those who walk and those who ride.

Turkeys to be trapped and released in central Minnesota
Gary Nelson, DNR Winona area wildlife manager, said the goal is to trap about 70 turkeys this winter and transplant the birds in Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, Morrison County and the Snake River State Forest. More birds might be trapped and transplanted elsewhere.

Clara Martha Demmers recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her family at the Woodland Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Brainerd. She was born Feb. 1, 1904, in Roosevelt Township near Brainerd. Although she traveled extensively, she never lived more than 12 miles from the site of the log cabin where she was born.
