A friendly wrestling match turned into an attempted murder charge for a 37-year-old Brainerd man.
David Charles Erickson, accused of stabbing his neighbor, 24-year-old Jason Arnzen, early Monday at their north Brainerd apartment building, faces three felony criminal charges.
Erickson is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of second-degree unintentional attempted murder, first-degree assault and terroristic threats.
According to the criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Crow Wing District Court against Erickson:
At 2:38 a.m. Monday officers responded to an apartment on the 200 block of North Seventh Street after receiving a report of a stabbing.
Upon arrival at the apartment, officers found Arnzen covered in blood and bleeding profusely from the neck.
Arnzen told officers that he had gone over to Erickson's apartment, where the two men had engaged in a friendly wrestling match.
During the course of the wrestling match, Arnzen said he took Erickson down, which upset Erickson. According to Arnzen, Erickson told him, "You think you're a bad (expletive deleted)" and "I'm going to kill you dude."
Arnzen said a fixed-blade knife was used to stab him in the neck. A knife with blood on it was recovered from Erickson's apartment. Blood also was observed on Erickson's hands and clothing.
Erickson told police Arnzen had come to his apartment to drink beer but while in the apartment a wrestling match/fight occurred as a result of a "male-dominance thing."
Erickson admitted to police that he pulled a knife on Arnzen and stabbed his neighbor in the neck while he was behind him.
Arnzen was reported in good condition Tuesday at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
Erickson called 911 to report the stabbing, Brainerd police said, and was arrested without incident when officers from Brainerd and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department arrived. He remains in custody at the Crow Wing County jail.
According to a Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension criminal report, Erickson has several previous criminal convictions in Minnesota, including charges of felony burglary and felony aggravated robbery in 1990, misdemeanor driving while impaired in 2001 and a felony firearm violation in 2003.
