Warriors push Apollo, trounce Bemidji

ST. CLOUD - Brainerd gave defending Section 8-3A champion St. Cloud Apollo a scare before losing 30-29 and went on to easily defeat Bemidji 50-14 in a pair of section dual meets Friday.

Going into the first dual, Apollo was atop the Central Lakes Conference with a 9-0 mark, was 19-3 overall and ranked sixth in 3A.

Brainerd's Tyler Kohlmeier turned in a strong performance at 160 to score a 5-0 decision over St. Cloud's Nick Lawwell. Chad Ohman followed with a 17-5 major decision at 171 over David Then to give Brainerd a 29-13 lead with three matches remaining.

Sam Pagel lost a close 3-1 decision to Apollo's Nolan Rial at 189, followed by Warrior forfeits at the final two weights that sealed the win for St. Cloud.

Luke Boran and Jessen Franzen won by pin at 112 and 140 for the Warriors and Nick Grausam won a 9-0 major decision at 135.

Against Bemidji, Bryton Mutz scored a quick 27-second pin at 103. Also winning by fall were Grausam, Franzen, Nate Adams and Pagel and Levi Rubin had a technical fall.

The 11-3 Warriors host Little Falls at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in their last dual meet of the regular season.
