Once again our city council fails miserably. They are elected to provide services to the residents of the city of Brainerd, yet they continue to pour money into the hockey arena and not take care of the city services.
It is Tuesday morning and it snowed off and on all weekend but they did no plowing or sanding until Monday, and it seems the sand they do put on has no salt in it to break up the ice. They still haven't gotten to Northeast.
So now all of the snow is packed and almost ice, I guess we will have to skate the rest of the winter.
I was proud of Baxter, for they were out after it already Sunday morning. When will our council see the light and start demanding of the administrator and the department heads that we want service? The streets should be plowed and sanded immediately and early in the morning so the snow does not get compacted. We were even able to accomplish this during the Depression years; they need to stop providing all the nice to have things for the special interest groups
A backroom deal
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's probably a duck. Speaking of ducks did you know that according to the Jan. 31 Minneapolis Star Tribune editorial, Justice Antonin Scalia and Vice President Dick Cheney went duck hunting together as guests of an oilman. That would be fine if it were not for the following.
Vice President Cheney is accused of allowing the oil and coal industries to write the energy bill stuffed with billions worth of corporate welfare for the oil and coal industries. It ensures our military involvement in the Middle East for decades to come. The energy policy bill is arguably one of the most important policy bills left to finish. It will determine our air and water quality, food safety, our climate, our economy and even whether our sons and daughters will die in foreign lands.
The vice president is also accused of getting help crafting this dirty deal from Enron chief Ken Lay. Lay will likely be headed to prison for his role in Enron.
Government corruption watchdog groups tried to get the vice president to say who actually wrote the bill that undermines our national security. Vice President Cheney refused. It went to court. The vice president lost. He appealed. The groups took our vice president to the Supreme Court. Now here's where it gets interesting.
It happens that duckhunting buddy Supreme Court Justice Scalia is going to vote on this case. His vote could affect Vice President Cheney's re-election and his oilman host. Justice Scalia should excuse himself from this case.
Instead of sending men to Mars to look for rocks maybe we should send someone to look for our democracy. This backroom deal walks like a duck and quacks like a duck to me
