Joseph Albert Kub died on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He was 89 years old.
Joe was born on Aug. 27, 1918, in Pine City to Joseph F. and Anna C. (Horejs) Kub. He attended school in Beroun and Pine City, where he graduated high school. He went on to college at the University of Minnesota in Duluth where he graduated in education with an emphasis in history. Following graduation, he taught in Denham, Minn., and hoped to become a history professor. However, his teaching career ended in December of 1941, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the European theater and was stationed at several air bases throughout England, Scotland, France and Germany. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945. At that time he transferred to the Air Force Reserve and was an active member until retiring in 1978 with a rank of senior master sergeant.
He married Ruth Von Rueden on Dec. 29, 1945. They were married more than 60 years until her death in April of 2006. The couple had two children, Gary (Gayle) Kub of Baxter and Gail (David) Novitzki of Brainerd.
Following his return from service, he moved to Hinckley where he worked at the Hinckley Co-op store for three months prior to becoming manager. He then worked at the local lumber yard and finally took a job with the U.S. Postal Service in 1951. He worked first as a clerk and then as a rural mail carrier until retiring in 1980. He prided himself on his punctuality, usually delivering the mail within a 15-minute time period. He could also still tell you who had lived in each home on his route and in most cases who lives there now.
Joe was active in the church, VFW, Legion, volunteer fireman, honor guard, Conservation Club and various community affairs until recently. He still attended as many meetings as he could and enjoyed his coffee group and all his friends at the senior center. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and time at the cabin on Bass Lake.
Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, a younger brother, Leonard, and his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his children, Gary (Gayle) Kub of Baxter and Gail (David) Novitzki of Brainerd; grandchildren Jonathan and Nathan Kub and Cassie and Nicholas (Angela) Novitzki.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Hinckley with Father Cornelius Kelleher officiating. Music was provided by Bonnie Marudas and Kathy Hagberg. Casketbearers were Cassie Novitzki, Nicholas Novitzki, Jonathan Kub, Nathan Kub, Dick Von Rueden and Doug Berg. Burial was at Rosehill Cemetery in Hinckley.
