Stella Urbaniak Walsh died Thursday, Feb. 3, at Woodland Good Samaritan. She was born in St. Cloud, Minn., on June 19, 1905, to Thomas and Mary Urbaniak. She graduated from St. Cloud Teachers College in 1929. She taught children in elementary schools in Clear Lake, Paynesville and DeGraff, Minn. In 1936, she married John J. Walsh of DeGraff, Minn., and had three children: Jon (Kathleen), Dr. David (Wendy) and Marie (Dick) Esser. In 1943, following her husbands discharge from the U.S. Army, her family moved to Duluth. In 1955, her family moved to Brainerd where she resided until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and her husband. She is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She remained a teacher all of her life, inspiring her children to earn a total of 10 college degrees. An adventurous person, she traveled to Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1973 to visit her son, who was assigned to the American Embassy, and from there, she flew to Russia to tour Moscow. She was an active member of St. Francis Church, Brainerd, for over 40 years. She was a fine musician who sight-read music and played the piano and church organ. She also was an excellent cook. Her table at her North Fourth Street home was a gathering place to celebrate many family occasions, holidays, birthdays and weddings. On these occasions, wonderful food would appear almost miraculously from her kitchen, seemingly with little effort. She had a deep sense of concern for her family and kept in contact with many friends and relatives. She was fluent in the Polish and German languages and maintained a lifelong correspondence with relatives in Poland. She was a generous person who sent money and supplies to help her relatives in Poland during the desperate times of the Cold War. Special thanks go to the staff of Good Samaritan Assisted Living, Good Neighbor Health Care, and St. Josephs Hospice for their excellent care and concern for Stella.
