MOORHEAD - Kyle Crocker scored 22 points and Mike Gervenak contributed a career-high 19 as the Brainerd Warriors defeated the Moorhead Spuds 68-57 in Section 8-4A action Tuesday.
It was the first time in seven games, and a 12-season span, that Brainerd has won at Moorhead.
"We haven't won in Moorhead in quite a while" Warriors coach Matt Urbanek said. "Anytime you can win in that gym its a big win."
Brainerd put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Spuds 41-28 by buckling down on the defensive end.
"I thought we really won the game on the defensive end in the second half," Urbanek said. We also decided in that half that we were going to make an effort to rebound the basketball and did a good job limiting them to one shot.
"Mike Gervenak had one of his best games, with his defense and hitting free throws and getting to the basket. Kyle Crocker also had a big game, rebounding and hitting some big shots.
Brainerd used a combination of patient offense to get high-quality shots and also outshot Moorhead 18-23 to 6-8 at the free throw line.
"We were patient and did a great job of executing our offense," Urbanek said. "We made them defend us and showed a lot of discipline within the offense."
