WALKER - A special meeting of the Cass County Board will be 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Shingobee Town Hall to consider transferring four sections of county roads from county to township ownership. The meeting is open to the public.
Snowfall down in January but season total is still above average
Snowfall in January was 5.25 inches compared to a 10-year average of 9.28 inches, the Brainerd DNR's Area Forestry Office reported. However, the seasonal snowfall total is 33.5 inches compared to an average of 23 inches.
Precipitation in January was measured at .36 of an inch compared to an average of .48 of an inch.
January's high temperature was 45 degrees on Saturday while the low was minus 36 on Jan. 16.
Grants offered from Sertoma Winter Wonderland
The Brainerd Sertoma Club is set to award grants to area organizations from the proceeds of the 2008 Sertoma Winter Wonderland. Application deadline is March 31 with grant distribution planned for May or sooner.
The grant guidelines have five focus areas and applications must address one or more of the following areas: Speech and hearing, environmental, public service, education and youth. Organizations applying for a grant may be for profit or nonprofit charitable organizations designated as a 501(c)3 by the Internal Revenue Service.

Indoor play gym offered
Brainerd lakes area families of young children are invited to play indoors from 9-11:30 a.m. Mondays and Fridays at the Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd and from 3-5 p.m. Saturdays at Pillager Elementary School, 323 East Second St., door U, during the winter months in a safe and healthy environment.
Tricycles, balls, scooters and other equipment are available to use. Parents must supervise their children and older children may participate as helpers.
Cost for the indoor play gym in Brainerd is $2 per child per visit. The indoor play gym is free at Pillager.
Punch cards must be purchased in advance at the Early Childhood Learning Center, 311 10th Ave. N.E., Brainerd, or call 454-5430. The gym will be closed when school is closed (Feb. 16, March 16 and 20 and April 10).
Pawlenty to headline Brainerd chamber's lunch with the governor
Gov. Tim Pawlenty will discuss his proposal for a Minnesota Jobs Recovery Act during the Brainerd Lakes Chamber's luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at The Lodge at Brainerd Lakes in Baxter.
He will share his strategy for moving Minnesota forward, which includes cutting the business tax rate in half during a six-year period and converting the capital equipment sales tax refund to an upfront exemption.
Brainerd Lakes Chamber members may enjoy a soup and sandwich buffet at this event, hosted by the Lakes Vybe Committee. The cost to attend is $15. Registration is limited to chamber members only. Cancellations must be made by Feb. 17 for a refund.
