Board members elected

The Lakes Area Senior Activity Center, 803 Kingwood St., Brainerd, has new board members for 2005. Elected in December were Doug Johanson, John Person and Wayne Holtmeier. Elected as officers were Bob Campbell, president; Jim Erickson, vice president; Ida MacFarland, secretary; and Steve Esser, treasurer. Other board members are Mary Lou Pfingsten, Kevin Thesing, Bonnie Franzen, Rick Kummet, Illa Hines and Julie Vreeland.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary offers nursing scholarship

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is offering a Marcella Arnold Nursing Scholarship designed to help fund the final semester of full-time nursing students seeking an associate degree or baccalaureate degree before the start of a licensed practical nursing program.

Applicants must be a resident of Minnesota. Non-residents of Minnesota must be a member of the Minnesota VFW or Ladies Auxiliary and attend a nursing school in Minnesota. Applicants must be eligible to join the VFW or its Ladies Auxiliary, or be a child or grandchild of a VFW or Ladies Auxiliary member.

The deadline for applying is April 1.

Marcella Arnold was a Veterans Affairs representative at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for more than 28 years. She died in 1980.

Brainerd American Legion offers scholarships

The Brainerd American Legion is offering $4,000 in scholarships to Brainerd High School seniors who plan to attend Central Lakes College next fall.

The Al Broman Memorial Scholarship is worth $1,500; the Frank Vadnais Memorial Scholarship and the four Scholastic Achievement Scholarships are $500 each. All scholarships can be used to work toward a four-year bachelor's degree or for study in a vocational or technical program on either the Brainerd or Staples campus.

Scholarship forms are available at the guidance office of Brainerd High School and must be completed by April 1.
