The Brainerd Warrior girls' U-10 hockey team won the championship in the Grand Rapids Star of the North Tournament Jan. 26-28.
In the championship game Brainerd defeated Pequot Lakes 4-2 with goals by Tory Brown, Gretchen Gramer, Hannah Moen and Karli Ring. Assists were by Paige Oakley and Kali Wolhart. Goalie Kayli Scammahorn had nine saves. Brainerd outshot Pequot Lakes 21-11.
Brainerd defeated Sauk Rapids 7-0 in the semifinals with goals by Paige Rivers, Kali Wolhart (2), Kelsey Zuk, Karli Ring, Emma Whiteman and Kristina Anderson. Assists went to Kali Wolhart, Tory Brown (2), Jenny Muesing and Hannah Moen. Goalie was Kayli Scammahorn. Brainerd outshot Sauk Rapids 47-1.
Brainerd defeated Cloquet 8-2 in the opening round with goals from Hannah Lundstrom, Paige Oakley (3), Gretchen Gramer, Tory Brown, Hannah Moen and Kali Wolhart. Assists were by Emma Whiteman and Karli Ring. Goalie Kayli Scammahorn had five saves as Brainerd outshot Cloquet 33-7.
The team is coached by Todd Brown, Jerry Oakley, and Ray Scammahorn. The team has made it to the championship game in all three of its tournaments this season and has won two. Brainerd's record is 16-3-0.
