BHS Orchestras to present annual Benefit Concert

The Brainerd High School Orchestras' annual Benefit Concert will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Tornstrom Auditorium, Washington Educational Services Building, in Brainerd.

Donations will go to Brainerd Area Kinship Partners.

The Sinfonia Orchestra will open with French composer Gabriel Faure's "Pavane," Russian composer Alexander Borodin's "Nocturne," Irish love song "Danny Boy," and two American pieces - "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin and "The Colorado Suite" by Francis Feese.

The Acoustic Guitar Ensemble will perform two German compositions: a trio for classical guitar by J.S. Bach and a movement for classical guitar quartet by Georg Philipp Telemann.

The Chamber Orchestra will perform the neo-Romantic "A Downland Suite" by English composer John Ireland, the Bach "E major Violin Concerto" (featuring senior Lise Holte), the "Serenade for String Orchestra" by Samuel Barber, "Bohemian Folksong" by Danish composer Carl Nielsen, "Brandenburg Concerto No. 5" (featuring guest harpsichordist Grace Forbord), and the first movement of "Rounds" by American composer David Diamond.

Mentor featured guest of CLC, Legacy Chorale

Phillip Mentor, a classically trained baritone from Trinidad and Tobago, will be the featured guest artist, and the Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota also will perform at two events Feb. 23-24 in Brainerd.

The events are open to the public and most of the proceeds benefit the Central Lakes College/Legacy Chorale Linda Dryden Music Endowment.

The schedule is:

Vocal master class, noon-3 p.m. Feb. 23 at Dryden Theatre, CLC, free. Mentor will preside over a class for CLC and high school students, community members and Legacy Chorale participants. The class will be followed by a meet-and-greet reception hosted by CLC students.

Violinist Lise Holte will perform with the Chamber Orchestra.

"A Musical Heritage," 7 p.m. Feb. 24, Trinity Lutheran Church, $8 (adults), free (CLC and high school students). Mentor will perform three pieces with the Legacy Chorale, and soloists from CLC and the community also will perform. The program includes popular folk songs such as "Shenandoah," "Loch Lomond," "Beautiful Dreamer," "Gentle Annie," "My Lady Greensleeves," "Simple Gifts" and "Danny Boy." A reception hosted by the Legacy Chorale will follow.

Mentor resides in Piscataway, N.J., and has performed with the New Philharmonic of New Jersey, the Montclair Chamber Orchestra and the Morristown Chamber Players. He studied at Montclair State University, and with teachers and coaches from the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the American Symphony.

Mentor has performed throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean. In 1986, he was selected African-American Singer of the Year and was first runner-up in the Regional Metropolitan Opera competition.

Linda Dryden, a longtime resident of Brainerd, died from cancer in 2003. Her husband, brother and mother created the Linda Dryden Music Endowment to celebrate her memory and love for music. The endowment's earnings enable the CLC music department and the Legacy Chorale to bring music professionals to the area.

Two local students make state band

Grace Forbord will accompany on the harpsichord.

Clarinetist Sarah Dens, a ninth-grader at Brainerd High School, and flutist Siri Smith, an eighth-grader at Forestview Middle School in Baxter, have been named to the Minnesota Band Directors Association Middle Level Honor Band.

Dens and Smith will be conducted by Douglas Orzolek, band director at the University of St. Thomas, and Mary Schneider, band director at the University of Minnesota.

The students will perform in a concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Elk River High School.

Folk dance night slated

Paul Wilson and Mary Abendroth of Brainerd will demonstrate international folk dance from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 22 in Room E101 at Central Lakes College in Brainerd.

Admission is free. Student senate food shelf donations are welcome.

Wilson and Abendroth will introduce dance forms from around the world, including circles, lines and mixes. Guests will have the opportunity to practice any form of dance that is being offered.

The CLC Spanish Club and Resource Center for Cultures and Languages of the Americans are co-sponsoring the program.
