Brainerd High School took second place out of 18 teams Friday at the regional competition of Minnesota Public Radio's 15th annual Music Listening Contest.
The BHS team will advance to state finals at 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
Sara Deloppe, Darren Clabo and Scott Lukins, all of Brainerd, claimed the second-place regional prize.
For months, more than 700 competitors from 100 schools around the state prepared for the event with the help of an MPR curriculum that familiarizes students with classical music history. Students listened to compact discs as part of the study. Musical selections were also broadcast locally on MPR's station KBPR 90.7 FM.
During the competition, a three-person team of musical youths had to correctly identify composers, periods and styles of classical music by listening to passages as short as 2 seconds to as long as 30 seconds.
The state contest will be emceed by Steve Seel, host of MPR's national round-the-clock classical music service, Classical 24, and one of MPR's weekend classical music hosts.
