Brainerd School Board Personnel Committee members met Friday in closed session to discuss teacher contract negotiations.
Superintendent Steve Razidlo said the board reconvened in open session and directed its negotiations team to begin the process of filing for mediation with Education Minnesota Brainerd, the district's teachers union.
Razidlo said the team will be contacting the Bureau of Mediation Services. He said union representatives were notified of the board's intent Friday.
Reached Friday afternoon, EMB union president Tim Edinger had the following statement:
"Both parties in the 2009-11 Brainerd teacher contract negotiations were contemplating mediation. EMB now joins two other Brainerd School District employee groups in mediation," said Edinger. "EMB is hopeful an impartial third party will be helpful in reconciling the remaining differences in the 2009-11 Brainerd teacher contract negotiations."
The district is involved with mediation with two of its six non-certified union groups, including educational assistants and food service workers. These two union groups, as well as the head cooks, clerical staff, interpreters for deaf students and custodial staff, have been working without a current contract since June 30, 2008. The only union the board has settled its 2009-11 contract with is its administrative union.
