Ben Baratto, Crosby, and Jacob Curtiss, Aitkin, were members this year of the Bemidji State University football team that earned the school's first trip to a post-season bowl game. Curtiss is a freshman majoring in graphic design and is a defensive lineman. Baratto is a senior majoring in graphic design and is a linebacker. Baratto was also named to the 2006 NSIC All-Conference honorable mention team.

BAXTER - The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at 7:19 a.m. Sunday at Grizzly's Grill N' Saloon, 15159 Edgewood Drive in Baxter. No fire was found.

The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 6 in the airport conference room.
COURTS
WALKER - Matthew James Cecka, 26, Grand Rapids, was sentenced in Itasca County District Court before Judge Jon A. Maturi for three Cass County burglary cases. For two counts of felony second-degree and one count of felony first-degree burglary, he was ordered to serve six months jail on each case concurrently and was placed on 10 years supervised probation.

CUSHING - A cabin on Pine Island Lake in rural Cushing was broken into last week, the Todd County Sheriff's office reported.

Cass County offices: relocate or remodel
BACKUS - Cass County could spend $37 million over the next 10 to 30 years to relocate the county and court offices and jail to a larger site or spend $20 million on the present downtown Walker site in the next 10 years and then be out of future expansion space.

The crumpled body of a car came to rest in the trees off Crow Wing County Road 4 about 6:30 p.m. Monday, just south of Breezy Point near Morrison Lane. Nowhere have I seen any of the ban smoking crowd propose that government and those at the public trough give up their profits from the sale of tobacco, i.e., taxes. In fact, they propose programs "for the children" that are funded by taxes from the sale of tobacco.

I very much agree that there need to be guard rails up on the hill between Super One and the stoplights. Those roads get slippery and that's a long drop if a car should slide off there. That is a common sense reason for those guard rails. The place would be a perfect place for those security lights. Why wasn't safety considered there? That's heavily traveled and should have been done.
