Merlyn "Bud" A. Steffenson, 69, Brainerd, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at home.
He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Cresbard, S.D., to Stephen and Lois (Alexander) Steffenson. In 1934 his family moved to Lougee Lake, north of Merrifield, where he attended the Ossipee country school. In 1941, his family moved to Brainerd. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1951 and enlisted in the Navy. He served from 1951-1955. He served on a destroyer as a radio operator. He graduated from Brainerd Junior College in 1957 and St. Cloud State College in 1959. He taught in an elementary school in California for one year, returning to Minnesota where he worked for North Central Airlines for several years. He married Mary Mitchell on March 21, 1970. He then worked as a social worker at the Brainerd Regional Human Services Center until his retirement in 1995. He was a long time member of Park United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was also active in the Northcountrymen Barbershop Chorus in Brainerd and was a member of the Brainerd American Legion Post No. 255.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Susan Clarke, Laurie Li and Sarah Park, all of Plymouth; five grandchildren; a brother, Lyle Sheffenson, Nisswa; and two sisters, Arlene Potocnik, Sunnellon, Fla., and Shirley Bergquist, Aitkin.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Park United Methodist Church in Brainerd with the Rev. Rory Swenson officiating.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post No. 255.
