Allene Herman, age 74, formerly of Staples, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, her daughter's home in Brainerd. A memorial open house will be Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, from noon to 2 p.m. at Brenny Funeral Home in Staples with a commemorative service at 1 p.m.
Allene Barrington was born Feb. 16, 1930, in Winona to William and Olga (Thompson) Barrington. As a young child she moved with her family to Clarissa where she grew up and attended school. Following her education she moved to Staples where she worked at The Federated (later known as Batcher's). She met and married Keith Cole in 1947 and they moved to California, where their daughter, Vickie, was born. After divorcing, Allene returned to Staples. She was married to Birten Herman in 1958, and their daughter, Betty, was born. The couple later divorced. Allene worked as a cook at the Staples school for 23 years, retiring in 1993. She enjoyed woodworking, needlework and writing stories. An avid and eclectic reader, she especially enjoyed learning about archeology and geology.
Allene is survived by two daughters, Vickie (Roger) Saterbak, of Brainerd, and Betty (Christopher) Roehl, of Barrows; two sisters, Alice (Donald) Wolf, of Eagle Bend, and Joyce (Dick) Prochniak, of Coon Rapids; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel (James) Norwood, and their children, Brant and Kennedy, of Brainerd, Michael Bottorff, of Brainerd, Pat (Jane) Jay, and their children, Maisey and Madison, of Crosby, and Gene (Marissa) Engish, of Brainerd. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
