NISSWA -- Twelve high school seniors will participate in the annual Miss Nisswa Scholarship Pageant at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa.
Admission is $4. The event is sponsored by the Nisswa Area Women of Today.
Following is a rundown of candidates:
Stephanie Petersen, Nisswa, the daughter of Ron and Bev Petersen, attends Brainerd High School. She enjoys gymnastics, diving, cross country running, track and field and is a member of Class Cabinet and Key Club.

She plans to attend college and become a massage therapist, and hopes to own her own business and become a coach for diving/gymnastics or track.
Jenna Marie Bergin, Nisswa, the daughter of Tim and Ann Bergin, attends Brainerd High School. She is captain of the Brainerd Warrior Alpine ski team and secretary of the senior class. She enjoys boating, Lutheran Church of the Cross Senior High Youth Group and hanging out with friends at the movies and listening to music.
She plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth, possibly majoring in biology. She then plans to pursue a career in either dentistry or pharmacy.
Joelle McDonald, Merrifield, the daughter of Jaime and Patti McDonald, attends school in Crosby-Ironton. Her interests include Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, being a member of Advisory Council, Drama Club and Triple Trio, being danceline captain and participating in track and field. She enjoys writing poetry and singing.
She plans to attend Bemidji State University to major in music and to be a choir director or sing the music herself.
Jennifer Garry, Lake Shore, the daughter of Bill and Theresa Garry, attends Brainerd High School. She is active in competitive swimming, listening to and singing music, playing the flute and piccolo and getting together with friends. She likes the arts, like music and design in graphics/interior and photography. She plans to attend college and major in liberal arts. She is undecided on her specific goal as yet.
Katherine Verkennes, Nisswa, the daughter of Mary Kay and Bob Verkennes, attends Brainerd High School. She enjoys BHS Kixters, softball, downhill skiing and helping out at church as a young Apostle. Her plans include going to cosmetology school in Mankato.
Sheena Marie Geike, Nisswa, the daughter of Richard and Jane Geike, attends Pequot Lakes High School. She has been on the varsity danceline for the past four years and has danced at Music General since age 5. She is involved in Mock Trial, SADD and Publications. During the fall she was a varsity cheerleader. She enjoys spending time with friends and family and collects dolphin items. Her plans include attending the University of St. Thomas or Bemidji State University where she will major in pre-law. She hopes to continue dancing by trying out for the danceline at one of those colleges.
Julie Ann Williams, Nisswa, the daughter of Richard and Karen Williams, attends Brainerd High School. She is a member of A Cappella Choir, Windfall, Symphonic Band (clarinet), Jazz Band (tenor saxophone), Art Club, Knowledge Bowl, Drama Club/Productions and plays piano. She enjoys photography, travel, skiing/snowboarding, reading, fishing, working with others, nature and the outdoors. She plans to attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, if accepted, where she will pursue a double major in music/theology and religious studies. After college she anticipates a move to New York to work on Broadway and attend graduate school. If not accepted at St. Olaf, she will consider Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
Rachel Lander, Merrifield, daughter of Tim and Sandy Lander, attends Brainerd High School. She is involved with cross country running, Kixters (dance team), and track and field. She also enjoys triathlon class, playing piano and being on the lake. Her plans include attending the Mayo School of Health Sciences and pursuing a career in the field of radiology.
Tiffany Schaefer, Nisswa, the daughter of Ted and Robyn Schaefer, attends Brainerd High School. She enjoys hanging out with friends and just relaxing and having fun. She is a member of Student Council and Class Cabinet so is often doing projects for those clubs. She plans to go to college, as yet undecided where, and is considering a bachelor or master's degree in psychology.
Colleen Marie Anderson, Lake Shore, the daughter of Tom and Paula Anderson, attends Central Lakes College. She participates in Psychology Club and Recovery Club at CLC, is a member of Nisswa Women of Today, and volunteers often for the city of Nisswa. She loves shopping, hanging out with friends, traveling, boating, dancing and watching movies. She would like to earn an associate of arts degree from CLC next year and continue on to a four-year college to get a degree in psychology.
Andrea Koob, Nisswa, the daughter of Joe and Ann Koob, attends Brainerd High School. She is a member of the varsity Alpine ski team, does the high jump for track and field, sings, reads and hangs out with friends.
She plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. Her major is currently undecided, but she is considering architecture.
Erin MacDonald, Baxter, the daughter of Colin and Sue MacDonald, attends Brainerd High School. She enjoys soccer, track, snowboarding, skateboarding, reading, being with friends and family, movies, art, French and Youth in Government.
She plans to attend St. Ben's or St. Thomas and would like to continue with French, possibly going into international business.
