St. Paul -- Francis J. Seelen, 83, St. Paul, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in an traffic accident in St. Croix County, Wis., in which his wife also died.
He was born April 6, 1917, in Lastrup to Christian "Peter" and Susan (Otremba) Seelen. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Little Falls where he attended school. He worked for the CCC in various places for two years. He entered the Army in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater until 1945. He began working for the Gould Battery Corp. in Illinois. He married Eda M. Mathieu on June 5, 1948. They lived in Rock Island until 1963 when he was transferred by Gould Battery Corp. to Huntington, W.V. In 1971, he was transferred to St. Paul and was the supervisor for parts control at Gould Battery until retiring in 1983. He worked as a security officer for Carson Pirie Scott for a few more years. He was active in Assumption Catholic Church in St. Paul and was a member of the Little Falls VFW Post 1112.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Seelen, Virginia, Jeffrey Seelen, St. Paul; two daughters, Janet Haught, Huntington, W.V., Roberta Seelen-Wolf, St. Paul; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence Seelen, Little Falls, Peter Seelen, Elk River; three sisters, Lucille Moser, Little Falls, Julie Smith, Lastrup, Isabelle Barnes, Little Falls.
Four brothers, Anthony, William, Leonard and Alexander Seelen, died earlier.
Services for Francis and his wife, Eda, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, with parish prayers at 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. until the service hour Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
