Once again the Brainerd Jaycees have done it in style. The $100,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza was a huge success thanks to the thousands of hours put in by this tireless group. If you were a participant in this year's event, you were a part of a record setting crowd that helped raise money for local charities. The business sponsors are an obvious catalyst in making this a dream come true for Camp Confidence and other non-profit agencies that benefit from this huge undertaking.
I overheard one of the Jaycees saying that even though the work seems at times to be overwhelming, when it is time to present the checks to the people this benefits, it makes it all worthwhile. The Jaycees will never even know the lives they have and will touch.
When you are doing business with a sponsor of the Extravaganza or when you are talking to one of the Brainerd Jaycees, take the time to say thank you.

Memorial Day Committee
The Crow Wing County Memorial Day Committee wish to thank the editor who wrote the excellent editorial in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch, in regard to our appeal for volunteers to continue the Memorial Day program.
Thank you for printing my letter even though it was too long for an Open Forum.
Because of the two articles we had many new people attending and phone calls from others wishing to help. The Brainerd Youth Hockey President attended, to volunteer the boys to help. Employees from Norwest Bank were there to volunteer, plus, input from others interested in keeping the tradition of the Memorial Day Services for years to come.

Whittier Fun Night
Would you expect an elementary school gym to be full of parents, children, grandparents and neighbors on a cold and snowy Friday night in January? It might seem especially unusual on a Friday that school was not even in session. No, it was not a basketball game, gymnastic meet, nor school musical program. It was a Family Fun BINGO Night sponsored by the Whittier PTO. There were not elaborate prizes, just simple little gadgets that all kids love. It didn't cost a single penny and it was not a fund raiser, it was just an opportunity to get together with our neighbors and "play" with our kids. We all had a ball!
Organizers of the event didn't expect a large crowd. We thought maybe we'd be lucky if 30-40 showed up -- but we didn't care, we thought it would be fun no matter what! Well, were we surprised when the crowds kept coming and coming! Nearly 200 showed up to play Bingo! The gymnasium was filled to capacity with smiling, happy Whittier families from preschool age to grandparents. The great smell of popcorn and warmth created by the simple happiness of being together was worth every minute of effort it took to pull it off. I have to say thank you to the Whittier staff who volunteered their time on a busy Friday night. I also especially thank our faithful Whittier PTO volunteers, who are always there when we need them. But more than anything, I thank the families who realized the time they would spend that Friday evening with their kids was a gift that will last a lifetime.
