(Photos) Gerald Flansburg of Brainerd landed this 18-14 northern using a sucker minnow in 15 feet of water on North Long Lake. Tom Whitehead of Brainerd caught this 8-4 walleye in 14 feet of water on Gull Lake using a minnow.

If Joe Hennick could find the two burglars who ripped off the safe at his Deerwood firm he'd probably thank them. He was planning to junk the 1,000 pound safe this week - after he removed the 50-cent roll of pennies, which was the only item in it.

Lt. Rudd Thabes, son of Nordica Thabes, Brainerd, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Serving at the U.S. Naval Station at Adak, Alaska, he shuttled 24 sailors to shore via helicopter in a two-hour rescue mission from a grounded vessel in gale winds.

Mayor Levi Johnson has issued a warning to persons using stoker coal to go easy on their supplies. The situation here is critical, said the mayor. We don't know when new supplies can reach the city due to the nationwide coal strike.

Ceremonies of dedication for the new Washington High School will be conducted in its auditorium tonight, with the public and members of the senior class invited to attend. Gov. Christianson and Commissioner of Education McConnell will speak.
