NISSWA -- Prizes totaling $1,000 will be awarded in the 2004 Nisswa Winter Jubilee snow sculpture contest.
Sign up to reserve a pile of snow at Triangle in Nisswa. The sculptures will be judged 10 a.m. Feb. 14, before the Nisswa Winter Jubilee Parade.
Prizes include $250 for first, $150 for second, $100 for third and $75 for fourth place in the adult class; and $175 for first, $125 for second, $75 for third and $50 for fourth place in the youth class.

Learn to cross country ski or snowshoe at Deep Portage
HACKENSACK -- Deep Portage Conservation Reserve near Hackensack will offer cross country skiing and snowshoe hiking in February.
Learn basic cross country skiing techniques on Deep Portage trails at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7. Bring skis, or skis will be available.
A Deep Portage naturalist will take participants on a snowshoe hike at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Bring snowshoes, or they will be available.

Early childhood screenings set in Emily
EMILY -- Emily Charter School will hold early childhood screenings for Head Start, pre-kindergartners and kindergartners 9 a.m. to noon March 5 and April 2.
The screenings are free. They are available to children who will enroll in the pre-kindergarten program for 4-year-olds or the kindergarten class for 5-year-olds in fall 2004.
To be eligible for these classes, children must be 4 or 5 by Sept. 1, 2004.
Screenings also will be held for 3-year-old children interested in the Head Start program, which is based on special needs and family income, and is provided by Tri-County Community Action. Call 829-2410 for more information on Head Start.
The screenings will include hearing and vision tests, height and weight assessments, a developmental screening and immunization review.
Parents must accompany children to the screenings, which are conducted to detect any possible areas of concern before children enter school. Parents must bring the child's immunization record and a copy of the child's birth certificate.
