WALKER -- The Cass County Recorder's Office recorded in 2003 nearly double the number of documents as eight years ago and collected more than double the recording fees, said Recorder Katie Norby.
While the number of Universal Commercial Code documents declined from 1,400 in 1996 to 907 in 2003, the vast increase in abstract and Torrens document recording over the same time period more than offset that change.
In 1996, 779 Torrens documents were recorded, compared with 1,528 in 2003. There were 11,163 abstracts recorded in 1996 and 18,080 in 2003.
This reflects the significant increase in property title transfers during Cass County's recent population growth, as well as high numbers of mortgage refinancings during the recent low interest rate period, Norby said.
The department collected $279,487.25 in recording fees in 1996 and $489,206 last year.
Some of the increased workload has been made manageable by converting to electronic recording and mapping software programs.
