20 years ago (1983)

Bennie Myers is the 1982 recipient of the Outstanding Farmer-Sportsman Award. A native of North Dakota, Myers moved to the Pequot Lakes area during the 1930s. He learned about European forestry management while stationed in Germany during the war.

30 years ago (1973)

Men of draft age no longer face induction but Selective Service System is still intact and 18-year-old men still must register and receive draft cards.

40 years ago (1963)

At least 115 employees will be added at the Brainerd State School and Hospital in the next two years if Governor Elmer L. Anderson's budget recommendations are accepted.

60 years ago (1943)

With everything to gain and nothing to lose, an underdog Staples team caught the Warriors on an "off night" and upset the dope bucket by edging the Brainerd lads 22-20.

80 years ago (1923)

Dr. Roy Williams has purchased a new Hupmobile from the Lively Auto Co. Thieves broke into his garage the first night he had it and attempted to steal it, but the doctor sleeps with one ear open and foiled the attempted robbery.

100 years ago

William Bailey took a tipover Saturday evening while out riding with Mrs. William Murray, and both he and Mrs. Murray struck the ground with some force.
