STAPLES -- Agnes Caroline Mertens, 75, Staples, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her home.
She was born May 14, 1926, in Byron Township to Carl and Anna (Hansen) Hanson. After high school in 1944, she went to Seattle and worked on airplanes for Boeing. She married Floyd Mertens on Dec. 29, 1945, in Staples. They farmed west of Staples for a few years before purchasing a farm near Leader. In 1956 they moved to their home in Staples. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the ladies groups and the local VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Belva Vogel, Staples; two sons, Laird Mertens, Roseau, and Warren Mertens, Motley; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Vernon Hansen, Creston, Washington.
Her husband; her parents; three brothers, Harold, Edgar and William; and a sister, Olive, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Tim Wenzel officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at Brenny Funeral Home in Staples with prayers at 7 p.m.
