The Brainerd School Board's newest members got an overview on the district's curriculum development policies Tuesday, as well as a briefing on its programs to help its brightest and struggling learners.
The school board Curriculum Committee met Tuesday and heard from Deb Lechner, director of teaching and learning, who explained the district's curriculum cycle and adjustments that the district makes to prepare students for increasing graduation standards.
Lechner also gave an update on the district's gifted and talented programs. The district hired consultants Karen Rogers and Karen Westberg, both professors at the University of St. Thomas, who visited with the school's gifted and talented task force on Jan. 13.
Lechner said the women will return to the next Curriculum Committee meeting Feb. 9 and provide recommendations and a possible three-year plan to implement changes in the district's gifted and talented programs.
Lechner also discussed the district's response to intervention programs, which provide struggling learners of all ages with early interventions so they don't become too far behind their peers.
The committee also heard from Sheila Haverkamp, executive director of the Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corp., who explained the economic development projects her organization provides in the community.
