The Earths organs have a cancer and its called bio-fuel. The last remaining rain forests in Brazil and Indonesia are her lungs. They clean the air of impurities like CO2 from burning fossil fuels. Rampant cutting and burning to grow monocultures of sugar cane and palm oil for fuel is killing mother Earth.
In Minnesota, the wetlands, lakes, and rivers are her kidneys. Healthy wetlands sequester CO2 from the air, just like the rainforests. 30 percent of global warming comes from deforesting, plowing, and draining. In 2006, farmers working in concert with U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson and the USDA relaxed wetland draining regulations, to accelerate the cancer of her kidneys.
Their intention is to grow more corn for bio-fuel ethanol even though over 90 percent of wetlands have already been drained. Thousands of lakes are heavily polluted with runoff from drain tiles and half the soil from should-be food producing fields is gone from erosion. Ironically, only minor funding is available for clean solar, wind, and plug-in hybrid cars that get over 100 mpg.
Every tax payer is contributing to this ultimate crime without choice because every gallon is 10 percent ethanol. There are no pumps without ethanol for those who object to this crime.
Minnesotans should not be forced to get worse mileage, have less power, and a more corrosive fuel. Ethanol has only 65 percent of the energy of gasoline and even at a 10 percent blend, there is a noticeable loss. Nearly every other state is free of this burden.
Because of its lakes, and tremendous outdoor opportunities, Minnesota is the last place in this country where ethanol should be produced. Legislators must give us a choice at the pump and re-prioritize alternative energy funding. Call or write them often.
