MINNEAPOLIS - The Brainerd Warriors secured a fourth-place finish, their highest in Class 2A True Team state meet competition Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Brainerd accumulated 1,580.5 points, trailing only Edina (2,060), Minnetonka (1,943) and Rosemount (1,734.5).
"We were sixth last year," Warriors coach John Zemke said. "We were really hoping to be third and win a trophy, but fourth is a very good finish, probably the best we could have done."
The Warriors' highest finishes were third places by Britton Murrey in diving and by Jared Anderson in the breaststroke.
Murrey scored 313.65 points. Teammate Keenan Goodrich was fifth with 296.55.
"Britton competed well," Zemke said. "I thought all our divers did well. They scored a lot of points. Britton was right up there and hit key dives when he needed them."
Anderson, the 2A state breaststroke champion in 2007 and runner-up last year, cranked out a time of 1:00.65. Edina's Kelly Carter won at 58.96. Evan Lee-To of Minnetonka was runner-up at 1:00.65.
"Jared is about a second faster than he was at this time last year," Zemke said. "He'll keep building on that. The end of the year is what we gear for. He will continue to train hard. It doesn't do any good to rest for this meet and swim fast now when it's the end of the year we're looking at.
"He had a great swim. He was winning the race at 75 yards, but it's the 100-yard breaststroke, not 75."
Zemke pointed out that senior Michael Ruen had a competitive 500 free time (5:20.81) and freshmen Tyler Schneider, Sam Dellacecca and Andrew Solseth dropped time in the same event. He also said the 400 relay of Evan Reese, Alek Rudstrom, Andrew Goll and Jake Larson had its fastest split time.
