As recently as 1950 there were 1200 employees at the shops. Today that number has dwindled to a little more than 100, bringing concern from the community and workers that the shops are being phased out of existence.

The Lions Club here has announced committees which will spearhead efforts aimed at establishing an indoor hockey rink in Brainerd. Serving as coordinators of the committee are Dr. J.E. Echternacht and Jay Simon.

St. Joseph's Hospital staff appointments for 1962 saw Dr. Maurice Meller named chief of staff; Dr. John B. O'Leary, vice chief of staff; and Dr. Robert W. Poppie, secretary-treasurer.

-- Chet Roohr left Brainerd yesterday for Minneapolis to spend several days before being inducted into the U.S. Army.
-- Establishment of an air raid warden organization in Brainerd as an important phase of civilian defense was announced today by Frank N. Russell, chief warden.

Theodore B. Schaefer of the Model Meat Market, spoke at the Lions Club explaining the problems of local markets, the meat demands of the public, and with a chart pointed out the choicest cuts. He told marketing problems and the care exercised in buying standard meats.
100 years ago (1902)

-- Game warden Sam Fullerton admits that wolves may be pretty thick up in the woods, but says he hasn't received complaints that they are making much trouble for the deer.
