George Orning, Future Forum moderator, has extensive experience in planning.
Orning has a graduate degree in geography from the University of Minnesota and has done post-graduate work in forestry and information systems management.
He works with Widseth, Smith and Nolting in Baxter as a comprehensive planner. In addition, Orning has a faculty appointment with the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the University of Minnesota. In that position he is creating a sustainable development lake planning process for the state.
Orning is also working with the Association of Minnesota Counties to make a new land use/cover map of the state. Cass County served as one of the project's pilot counties. He was manager of research and policy for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and supervised planning activities such as the state outdoor recreation plan.
He has also served as research director of the Legislature Commission on Minnesota Resources. Orning serves on the board of directors for the Minnesota Lakes Association. He worked on the comprehensive plans for Baxter, Crosslake, Pillager, Longville, Aitkin County, Unorganized Territory, Crow Wing County, Mission Township, Pillager and Longville.
