CASS LAKE -- A 25-year-old Cass Lake man was charged Tuesday for the shooting death of Geraldine Whipple.
Richard Paquette, 25, Cass Lake, was charged with second-degree murder in Cass County District Court. Bail was set at $150,000. Paquette remains in Cass County Jail.
His next court appearance was scheduled for Feb. 5.
Whipple, 19, was shot in the head at her home around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, the Cass County Sheriff's Department reported. She died Monday at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
According to the criminal complaint, Paquette told Cass County deputies that, having been drinking and taking a pill for a toothache, he could not recall everything but does remember having an argument with Whipple earlier in the day and that he may have choked her.
Paquette was gathering items and leaving the residence, the report stated, and he took the gun, a .25-caliber handgun, from under the bed.
The complaint further states that while in a struggle, Paquette said he and Whipple fell to the floor and the gun discharged, striking Whipple.
The shooting occurred at a rural Cass Lake residence where Whipple and the suspect lived together, reported Cass County Sheriff Randy Fisher.
