Carlton E. Powell

Carlton Earl Powell, 78, Brainerd, passed away at his home in Brainerd on Jan. 21, 2009. He was born May 10, 1930, in Defiance County, Ohio, to James and Mary (Kiester) Powell. He married Mary Snavley on April 12, 1951, at St. Peter's Reformed Church in VanWert, Ohio.

He was in the United States Navy serving during the Korean conflict from 1951-1955. He was a millwright for 45 years at GM Assembly Plant in Defiance, Ohio. He moved to the Woodland Apartments in Brainerd in April 2005. He was an avid puzzle assembler and volunteered at Woodland. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 255 in Brainerd.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, Brainerd; his sons, Norman (Barbara), Brainerd, Larry (LouAnn), Chapel Hill, Tenn., Jeffrey, Duluth; and seven grandchildren, Jennifer Grams, Stephanie Lee, Jeremy Powell, Amanda Reiger, Sarah Hanson, Joseph Powell and Melanie Olson; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, John; and three brothers.

Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Heritage Assembly of God Church in Baxter with Pastor Mark Boone officiating.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the services at the church on Saturday. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post No. 255 of Brainerd.

Arrangements are with the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Brainerd.
