James Halbert, jail consultant for the state of Minnesota, told the Crow Wing County commissioners a new jail will be needed here within five years. Bill Olmsted, board chair, said that a bill in the Legislature calls for the state to pay half the cost.

The Brainerd Junior College Red Raiders took their perfect season record to nine games with a 59-55 victory at Virginia. Chuck Warnberg led the scoring with 15, assisted by Flash Flaaten with 11 and Tuffy Kovatovich with 9.

The severest storm of the season developed into blizzard status, leaving drifts from three to seven feet blocking roads. The temperature then dropped to 25 degrees below zero.

There are predictions that the Northern Pacific will have a big season. Rumors are afloat that the rails will be double-tracked from Carlton to Staples and that the iron mines will be shipping large quantities of ore.
