An advisory committee that will assist Brainerd School District staff and board members in the budget process planned to meet for the first time Tuesday night.
The committee, made up of five community members and several school staff members, intends to meet once a month for an undetermined amount of time. The purpose of these meetings is for advisory members to use their background and experience to provide constructive feedback on the district's budgeting process, said Steve Dickinson, the district's director of business services.
Community members who have been named to this committee, according to Dickinson, are Kari Christiansen, vice president of administrative services at Central Lakes College; Molly Kurtzman, who formerly worked in finance at Northwest Airlines and now she and husband Chris own Bang Printing; Craig Nathan, center operations manager for Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program at the Minnesota WorkForce Center in Brainerd; Mark Ronnei, director of real estate development, Grand View Lodge resort general manager and the Cote Family Companies chief executive officer; and Laura Oldham, a Brainerd parent.
Dickinson said other school officials who planned to attend the meeting included Brainerd Superintendent Jerry Walseth; Assistant Superintendent Steve Razidlo; district accountant Deb Silgjord. Dickinson said Bob Nystrom, board member and finance committee chair, also will attend these meetings but was unable to attend Tuesday's meeting.
The agenda included an overview of the school district budget and its revenue sources, including state government funding. The group was expected to talk about how much the state has spent on education, the district's financial past and the financial outlook for the district for the next three to five years.
Dickinson said they'd also discuss briefly the $5.5 million in budget reductions the district is currently having to make and review the timeline for those cuts. After Tuesday's meeting, Dickinson said the group would make a decision on what the agenda would be for next month's meeting.
